When you work for Macromedia, you get great employee prices on the user tools (we're talking 2 figure values), but not the servers. Which isn't a big thing if you're mainly doing development, since CFMX as well as Flex both support the developer edition.

But if you want to deploy into production, your options are either to fork out $$$ for a server or find a hosting partner, even if you're mainly a non-profit entity (except for Flex, where you can apply for a free non-commercial license).

I guess google Adsense revenue sorta eliminates the "Non-Commerical" aspect for many of us.

That, or use the FREE version of Blue Dragon, which allows for production deployment. Hear that Macromedia? How about a CFMX 7 Express.

It all depends what feature set you need for your deployed application.

So if your buddy works for Macromedia and you need user tools, kiss up, assuming they haven't used their yearly purchase on themselves. They are not allowed to sell it to you, but wonder of wonders what a nice dinner at McCormick and Schmicks can do.
